What to Wear?
Choosing outfits for your photoshoot might feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. With a little guidance, you can feel confident, comfortable and completely yourself — which makes for stunning, natural photos.
As a couple and wedding photographer based in Shellharbour, here are my best tips for choosing outfits that photograph beautifully.
Choose Colours that Complement Each Other
You don’t need to match perfectly — instead, choose colours that work together.
Soft neutrals, earthy tones and muted pastels always photograph beautifully.
Great colours for photos include:
• Beige, cream, oatmeal
• Soft blues and muted greens
• Terracotta, rust and warm browns
• Charcoal, khaki and soft grey
Avoid neon or bright colours, as they can cast colour on your skin and distract from your connection.
Choose Clothing That Moves Well
Flowy dresses, linen shirts, knit textures and fabrics with movement look amazing on camera. They add softness and dimension to your photos.
If your session is at the beach (Shellharbour and Kiama have some beautiful ones!), flowy dresses especially pair beautifully with wind and water.
Limit Distracting Patterns
Simple patterns are fine — small florals, subtle checks, textures.
Avoid:
• Large logos
• Bold stripes
• Heavy contrast patterns
• Anything too trendy
Classic is always timeless.
Comfort = Confidence
If you’re uncomfortable in your outfit, it will show in the photos.
Choose clothing that:
• Fits well
• Lets you move
• Makes you feel like your best self
When in doubt, bring one extra outfit and I’ll help you choose.
Coordinate, Don't Match
Think of your outfits as part of the same colour palette, not identical pieces.
For example:
• She wears a rust dress, he wears a beige shirt + brown chinos
• She wears a cream dress, he wears a soft blue button-up
It still feels cohesive without being “matchy”
Consider the Location
Your location plays a huge role in styling:
• Beach: soft neutrals, light colours, flowy fabrics
• Bush/forest: earthy tones, warm textures, boots
• Urban: darker tones, denim, layered looks
If you’re unsure, send me a photo of your outfits — I love helping couples choose.
Final Tip: Be Yourselves
Your photos will feel most genuine when you dress like your true selves.
Wear outfits you’d naturally choose for a nice date — simple, comfortable, timeless.
