Your wedding day begins long before you walk down the aisle — and so do your photos. The morning is full of excitement, laughter, nerves, and those little in-between moments that tell the start of your story. The getting-ready part of the day sets the tone for everything that follows, so let’s make sure it’s as stress-free (and photo-friendly!) as possible.

As a wedding photographer, I’ve learned a few insider tips that can make all the difference to how your preparation photos turn out. Here’s how to set yourself up for success:

The Weeks and Days Before

Try your dress on the night before.  Do this with the person(s) that is going to do this on the day.  Those bridal shops are experienced in doing up dresses, and quickly.  It also will give you time if you have forgotten something!

If you are having a spray tan, make sure it is done 2 days before the wedding.

Drink plenty of water for glowing skin and make sure you avoid processed food and get plenty of sleep.

Choose the Right Space

Light and space matter more than you might think.

Look for natural light — a room with big windows is perfect. Soft, natural light makes skin glow and creates that dreamy, romantic look in photos.

Think about space — if you’ve got six bridesmaids, hair and makeup artists, and a photographer all in one tiny room, it can get cramped and chaotic. Consider a spacious suite, Airbnb, or even a family home with good light.

Keep the Clutter Away

It’s easy for prep rooms to turn into a jumble of bags, dresses, shoes, and snacks. Try to keep the space near the window clear of clutter — that’s where we’ll take most of the detail and “getting dressed” photos. A tidy space = timeless, elegant images.

Have Your Details Ready

Before I arrive, gather everything you’d love photographed so it’s all in one spot. This might include:

• Dress & veil

• Shoes

• Rings

• Perfume

• Jewellery

• Invitation

• Bouquet

• Sentimental items (like a grandmother’s necklace or a handwritten note)

Having these ready saves time and means I can get creative with your detail shots while you enjoy your morning.

Timing is Everything

It’s always better to have a little extra time in your prep schedule than to feel rushed. Aim to be completely ready at least 60 minutes before you need to leave for the ceremony. This gives us time for:

• Portraits of you looking your best

• Fun moments with your bridal party

• Sweet, candid shots with your family

These are often some of the most emotional and joyful photos of the whole day.

Wear Something Thoughtful

While you’re having your hair and makeup done, wear something that looks pretty in photos and is easy to change out of — like a robe, button-down shirt, or slip dress. This avoids smudging your makeup or messing up your hair when it’s time to put your gown on.

If you are wearing a strapless/backless gown, don't wear a bra as this will leave marks on your skin.

Relax and Enjoy

The best prep photos happen when you’re present in the moment. Pop some champagne, put on a playlist that makes you happy, and soak up the excitement with your favourite people.

Remember: these photos are about more than just the “look” — they capture the anticipation, the laughter, and the love that surrounds you in those first precious hours of your wedding day.

✨ Pro Tip: If you’re planning a first look, I’ll usually start photographing bridal details at least two hours before the ceremony (three if there’s travel involved). This ensures everything flows smoothly without rushing.

Final Thoughts

Your wedding morning should feel relaxed and joyful, not frantic. With a little preparation, you’ll not only have a smoother start to your day, but you’ll also end up with beautiful, timeless photographs to remember it by. Let me know if you need help with your timeline.
