Kiama Surprise Engagement
There is something incredibly special about photographing a surprise proposal. The anticipation, the emotion, and the moment two lives change forever all unfold in a matter of seconds. Recently, I had the privilege of capturing a truly beautiful surprise engagement in Kiama on the stunning South Coast of New South Wales.
Kiama is one of the most romantic coastal locations in the Illawarra region. With its sweeping ocean views, rugged cliffs and the peaceful rhythm of the sea, it provides the perfect setting for meaningful moments. On this particular afternoon, the light was soft and golden, the groom to be was waiting for his future wife to arrive. The scene was set with flowers, lanterns, and a curtain backdrop. The bride to be was completely unaware that one of the most important moments of their lives was about to happen.
The groom-to-be had carefully planned every detail of the proposal. Wanting the moment to feel natural and intimate, he chose a quiet spot, in a secluded yard of a property, that overlooked the ocean where the waves rolled gently onto the rocks below. The bride to be's family also helped in the preparations. We all eagerly awaited her arrival! The timing was perfect, the bride to be walked down a spiral staircase, she looked outside to her groom to be, waiting in front of the setting. Their family dog was also waiting.
Her reaction was pure emotion — surprise, joy and disbelief all at once. Tears quickly turned into laughter and an overwhelming sense of happiness.
As they paused to take in the view, she knew what was coming, he gently spoke with her, calmed her, then he dropped to one knee and asked the question that would change everything.
These are the kinds of moments that make proposal photography so meaningful to capture. They are real, unscripted and deeply personal.
As a Kiama proposal photographer, my goal is always to photograph these moments in a relaxed and unobtrusive way. I allow couples to stay present in the experience while quietly documenting the genuine emotions as they unfold. After the proposal, the couple shared the moment with their family with some champagne.
Then we spent some time walking along the coastline capturing a series of engagement photographs as the couple celebrated together.
The natural beauty of Kiama provided a stunning backdrop for their engagement session. The dramatic coastline, the open sky and the gentle evening light created photographs that feel timeless and romantic. Locations like Kiama, Shellharbour and the wider Illawarra region offer some of the most breathtaking scenery for engagement and elopement photography.
Capturing a proposal is more than just documenting the moment someone says “yes.” It is about preserving the beginning of a new chapter in a couple’s story. These photographs become part of their history — something they will look back on for many years to come.
